In Memory

Fly high forevermore,

Beyond the blue, the stars are yours.

Part of them you now will be,

For all of us to always see,

When we gaze up with our eyes.

We will remember all your lives,

And know we'll always think of you,

As long as stars shine brightly through.-kurt bowman

Yesterday, Mama, Kim, Nina and I went to see the movie, Gods and Generals. The movie covers the period from the beginning of the War Between The States, often called The Civil War or The War of The Rebellion. Despite the fact that the critics panned the movie as being too long and too boring, I wanted to see it. I read the book of the same name and it was as good as Killer Angels which coverned the three days of the battle of Gettysburg. I found that the movie was as good as the book and was very close to the actual events of the war. The movie was so refreshing because there were no four letter words and no naked women or couples copulating. There was great emphasis on the importance of love of country and respect for God. Men were heroic and women were ladies and stoic. I recommend that everyone should read the books entiled Killer Angels and Gods and Generals. But an even better knowledge of the Civil War can be read in the excellent books of Bruce Caton. There is much to be learned from the study of history for those who do not benefit from the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

Dear family, What a wonderful day I had today. Bonding with Conor is one of life's best treasures. But Mama and I did much the same with the Shipley brothers and Amber and Hunter and then Sarah and now Conor. Tonight after dinner was over, I wrapped Conor up in a snug blanket and we went out and sat on the porch as evening came. We listened to the night noises and we were not much different from the people who lived in caves a million years ago. The Canada Geese flew over and the peepers sang their song and little by little, Conor and I were one with God. Life is so good I almost am afraid that it can't last. But for now, I love evey moment of it. Thank you Barbra and Derek for giving us the pleasure of your company and the wonderful experience as grandparents of your children.I sincerely wish that some day you all may experience such pleasure. Thank you. Love, Dad

Kurt, I know what it is like to loose someone. The closer we are to them, the harder it is to accept their departure. And then one day its our turn. Troy's death is a reminder that life is too short and that no one knows the day nor hour when the call comes for us. It pays to live every day as though it were the last. Never say goodbye without adding, I love you.

Today at work i was sitting at my desk and could see the window washer outside my window as we usually do from time to time but this time as he passed my window i heard him moving around and he srtated to scream in help like i had never heard before. Before i could get to the window he was gone from my view.I went outside to the parking deck thinking he would be hanging on by the rope but to my shock he had hit the ground.Never have a seen such a sight. Now he lays on the cement covered up with a sheet. How quickly life can change.

Dear Amber, Forgive me for giving you such a short answer on your question i.e. what did I mean? I told you to ask your Dad. But that was a cop- out. I know your Dad is busy and even though he would tell you what I meant, he is tired at the end of a day and may not have time to tell you. So, here is what I meant by saying that I was not going to ever drink French or German wine again. First, let me say that adults often think that kids are uninterested in current events. That kids are just interested in fun and games. But, I know better. When I was your age, I lived during some of the most dangerous times that our nation ever faced. I was born in the Great Depression. And when I was your age I lived through World War Two. And when I was your Dad’s age, I lived through the Cold War. When I was a young boy, my Dad took the time to educate me in the importance and meaning of current events. He taught me to appreciate what was going on and how it affected our family. He gave me both sides of the story and he made sure that I understood. He asked me questions and helped me understand adult issues. Of course, every generation has it’s own problems. I don’t mean school- work and the social life that kids have. But what I mean is that there are many difficult issues in the world today, which will affect you for many years and perhaps the rest of your life. Understanding those issues and how they affect you is important. For some day, you may be involved in solving some of those problems. As you know, the USA is engaged in preparing to go to war with Iraq. I don’t know what you have been told by your teachers so I will tell you that Iraq is very dangerous to our nation. You remember that on 911 Muslim terrorists hit our Trade Centers in New York and many innocent Americans were killed. Why do I say innocent? It is because none of those who were killed did anything to the terrorists to cause their death. It is unfortunate but many people around the world hate the USA. We are hated because we live in the richest and most successful nation in the world. Despite all of the things our nation has done to help other nations, there are still many people in the world who hate us and want to kill us. Unless we protect our selves, the USA may face many years of danger the same as the Jews are facing over in Israel. So, our President is leading many of the nations who are members of the United Nations to disarm Saddam who is the dictator of Iraq. So, where does Germany and France come into the picture? Both of those nations are members of the United Nations Security Council and they want to prevent the USA from going to war against Iraq. Let me put it to you this way. Let’s say you are preparing for a meet. You have many people pulling for you. Most of your friends hope that you do well and that you win. But two of your good friends plot behind your back to prevent you from competing in that event. Then all of sudden you get he word that two of your best friends are plotting against you. First you are hurt. Then, you are angry. And then you are sure you don’t want anything else to do with those who are plotting against you. That is where the USA is. Germany and France, who were good friends of the USA for many years, are now plotting to prevent the USA from going to war against Iraq. That is it in a nut- shell. Of course it is much more difficult than that, but that is what it would mean if it were your friends. I hoe you will understand a little better. I love you.

What do you think of the sameless performance of France and Germany? I for one will not drink French or German wine ever again. Have you bought your duct tape?
