September 2001 News Vault

9-1

My God!  It's September!  How did that happen?  Summer is almost over.  We received more pictures from Nanny and Poppa today.  Take a look.  I really envy them.  I am glad they are sharing their trip with us.  This weekend is going to be a busy one.  Have fun normal people.

9-2

I am off on labor day!  I plan a day of complete relaxation.  If your are looking for me I will be in my sleeping bag in front of the t.v.  Visitors are welcome.  Expect an unshaven wreck of a man.

9-6

I am off this Sunday.  Does anyone want to join me at the coast for an evening swim?  We can tie a dozen or two pork chops to our our swim trunks and tempt fate.  Better yet, lets jump out of a perfectly good airplane.  Life is good!  Check out this website. www.cutoffmyfeet.com   Be happy with your lot in life.  It could be a lot worse.

9-7

My new computer arrived today.  I am now capable of taking over the planet.  Surrender earthlings.  I will show you mercy.

9-8

Amber is now a cheerleader!  I can't wait to see her in her uniform.  Good job sweetie.  Grandpa and Grandma joined Hunter for lunch at his school.  Thank you.

9-11

racer.jpg (25552 bytes)September has proven to be an absolute kick in the nuts.  Isn't that a great phrase?  Mitch taught it to me.  I love when you can find the humor in life's obstacles.  Life is nothing more than lesson after lesson.  It reminds me of a few other quotes:

Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
Laughing helps. It's like jogging on the inside.
If you can remain calm, you just don't have all the facts.

And last but not least:
Eat a live toad first thing in the morning, and nothing worse can happen to you the rest of the day!

9-12

We will never forget yesterday.  Unthinkable events have occurred in America that compare to no other.  May the retaliations come swiftly and furiously!

9-13

Please note a couple of changes on actnuts.  I have changed the music loop and added a mute button for those that can't stand a good beat.  Secondly, the actnuts guest book has undergone a complete revamping.  It was formerly hosted by a third party service because I didn't know how to publish my own.  That has now changed.  Have a look for yourself and let the comments flow freely!  I also have the home cam up again.  You can see live video by clicking the link on the right side of this page..

9-14

Good luck Mark on your belt examine tonight.  Hunter tests tomorrow.  I will miss it as usual.  Amber looks very sweet in her cheerleader outfit.  Nanny and Poppa are on their way back from their trip.  With all that is happening in the world I think they want to be closer to the loved ones.  Have a safe return!

9-15

goof.jpg (25736 bytes)Congratulations to Mark on his orange belt achievement and Hunter on his Green belt achievement.  You guys are great!  The family celebrated by going out to Barnaby's for dinner.  I missed it of course but my heart was there with them.  Nanny and Poppa are home.  I can't wait to see the rest of their pictures.  Tomorrow we are having lunch at Lake Ella.

9-16

Lake EllaOur Lake Ella picnic was fun.  We talked about our country and how it has been changed.  We missed not having the entire family there.  Click here or the picture to see the rest of the pictures.

9-19

Amber the CheerleaderTonight Amber had her first cheerleading event.  As you can plainly see, she looked absolutely adorable in her outfit.  She really seems to enjoy this new activity.  Everyone got home late tonight from the jamboree and I am sure they will all be tired tomorrow.  But you have to take time out to have fun with life.  It goes by much to quickly.

9-24

Great weekend!  I was off on Saturday so I was able to watch Hunter play football.  Afterwards, I took him to Kenpo.  Saturday night, Barbra, Derek and the kids came over to talk, drink and watch a movie.  We watched Tombstone.  Sunday we walked through the park with Grandpa, Nina and Mark.  This week will b a busy week.  Not to worry.  The fridge is filled with beer.

9-25

One bright day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight!
Back-to-back they faced each other,
Drew their swords, and shot each other!
A deaf policeman heard the noise,
Came and killed those two dead boys!
If you don't believe this lie is true,
Ask the blind man, because he saw it too.

9-26

Diplomacy is the art of saying "nice doggy"

until you can find a rock.

Happy Birthday Barbra!

Today, when we met at the Shipley's for our Sunday walk in the woods, Kurt said that the events that happened on 911 may have been the best thing to have happened to the USA. While I was trying to digest that, I thought, most of the day, about what Kurt had said. It seemed so hard to accept. Yet, Kurt was right! Despite the terrible loss of life at the WTC, war against terrorism is good for the USA. Then as Mama and I rode along on our way to a picnic at Lake Ella, there were car fulls of young people, flashing the V for victory sign with their two fingers thrust upward toward the blue autumn sky. All along the way, there were cars with the Flag of the USA flying on cars and houses all over Tallahassee. The USA is united as it has not been since WW2. People are smiling, laughing, they are happy. Happy to just be alive. Happy to sit in the sunshine on a beautiful autumn day. We have not fully realized what war is all about. But we are at war. Like the people at the beginning of the Civil War, people are thinking... it will be over in a few weeks or at best a month. And we know we will win. Americans have forgotten what it is like to loose. But, this will be a war like no other. Even the experts have much to learn. Men (and women) will go off in the middle of the night and some will come home and others will not. Unless tragedy happens to the one we love or to a close friend or relation, most of us will not be touched directly. Most of us will never feel the privation and suffering that happend during The Big War. There will be no D- Days or Omaha Beach or Battle of the Bulge. In fact, most of us will not be touched directly at all. Yet, we, everyone of us, are all a part of the war effort. It is exciting. It feels good to be on board. political parties are united. Even our X- president, Clinton and X- Vice President Gore have said, "We must back our President." Our President! why, just three weeks ago, the Democrats were plotting how to dethrone George W. Bush, (the un- elected president). Now, even the most anti- Republican's are staunchly behind the President. And what about the opposition to the War effort? Yes, there are a few war protestors, but they are just seen as fringe nut cases. They are even seen as anti- Ameican. Their pityful cry's of Peace and No more war, go unheard. And what about the economics of the USA? Our President has said, we must continue to live our lives and enjoy the American way of life. In fact it is patriotic to Buy Buy Buy! somehow it is patriotic to buy that new Car. Team Toyota has never done so well. The department stores are doing a land office business. WalMart is doing great. Yes, War is good for business. This just might be the best thing that has happened to the USA in a long time. Kurt was right!

Dearest Family, Thank you all for joining us last evening. Also Teri, Tom and Jason how nice that you could join us. We had a great time planning and getting ready to have you all here. We do love and enjoy you all. Thank you family for helping us with food, drinks and laughter and of course clean up. I am pleased that we were able to surprise Derek and he was a good sport to wear the "Groom crown". Our best wishes to both Barbra and Derek and many more happy birthdays, Barbra. We did miss Matthew and Jennifer. Thanks to all again and a special thankyou to Adam, Amber, Sarah and Hunter for helping Grandma. We love you.

What a wonderful evening. Derek was the groom. Barbra was the birthday girl. Teri Jason and tom were with us to help celebrate the occasion. Kim and family arrived early and thought the party was somewhere else. Christy, Amber and Hunter brought chairs. The festivities began out on the back porch and continued inside when it got cool. Derek wore his groom hat and looked the part. It was a family evening, despite the incidents that happened on 911. Family is the only thing that counts these days. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

It is a beautiful autumn day here in the Big Bend. How good to be alive and know that every moment is precious. Today is Barbra's birthday. When I was in Viet Nam, the first time, I got word through the Red Cross that my Mom was seriously ill and probably would not live. I was on the first plane back to the States in a few hours. Across the northern part of the world to Alaska and then to Magurie AFB outside of Mount Holly. Within a few hours of my arrival in the USA, we were off to Millersburg and then to the hospital at Harrisburg. Yes, my Mom had had a stroke and was paralized. We waited and waited but her condition had not changed. And then, I had to go back to Viet Nam and leave Mama with the problem. But I left her with Barbra also. Yes, within a few days after arriving at Mount Holly,Mama had become pregnant. So, the years have passed by and our little Barbra has grown up. Now she has her own family with a wondeful husband. Her life has changed 180 degrees and she now is the winner of life's lottery. How little we know. In a second, our life can change completely. One life slips away, while another life begins. When you come to a fork in the road, how your life can change. That is life! We are so happy now that our Barbra is happy. For the happiness of our children is the most important thing in our life.

Thank you all for the compliments. I may have to pamper myself more often. But most of the time I am lazy. It was fun to be out with all the young women Thursday evening. They are a great group and I am pleased that Nina and Barbra has the pleasure of working with them. It helps to make life a little easier. Sarah I loved the time you spent with me. It was fun doing your hair. Amber and Christy it was great to see you. Sorry about the message center Christy. I promise in the future to contact you by phone. Love to all. See you all this evening on the back porch.

Last evening, I met a beautiful woman. She was as beautiful and the young woman I met 0n 10 August 1951 on Front Street in Philipsburg, Pa. When I met this beautiful woman last evening, I fell in love immediately. Her hair was perfectly coiffed. Her smile was radient. She stood tall and straight. What was her name? You know. After fifty years, I still love her and think she is still one of the most beautiful women I have ever met.

Does it feel like autumn? Open your windows and doors at night and get out the blankets. This is the best time of the year. From now and for the next 6 months, is the best time in the Big Bend. This is why we love Florida so much. Last evening Barbra and the kids were over for dinner. Adam cooked the egg rolls and we had stur fry with all the trimmings. Adam is getting so handsome, no wonder all the girls love him. Keep your eye on the goal, Adam . Girls come and they go but education comes first. After all, none of them mean anything except the one you will marry. Sarah and Grandma had a good time together. Having our Barbra over for dinner was wonderful. We love her. Just think, this weekend Barbra and Derek will be vetted. Well, whatever you call it. I spied Christy and Ambrer this evening. Christy sure gets a work out taking the kids to gym and football. It was nice to see Christy even if for a few seconds. Having our family here in Tallahassee is so nice for we see our kids coming and going. Mama and I went out for dinner tonight. Mama looked so pretty in her new blouse. Back to the drawing board with the contacts. Love you all. Dad

What a wet, dark, dreary, grungy rainy day. But, I loved it! Rainy days are for us old shut-in's who love to read and do handy work. I can be at my computer and write my memories and look out at Lake Kilkee and see the rain drops on the lake. Buddy and I can curl up and I can talk to him about the finer points of life. (bet you didn't know that dogs can communicate) Read, read, read. I have four books going. One for the crapper one for each room and one in the car. When you have a book, you are never lonely. It is good to see all the activity in Actnuts. The more communication, the better. Some how I can't get the Amber site but it just may take more tries. Can you imagine that September is all most over? This weekend will be the party for the Roberson's. Family! the best word in the dictionary besides love, of course.

Kurt-superb job on the site with all of its animation, voice remarks and it has a good search engine for finding what you are looking for. Thoroughly enjoyed the picnic last weekend. Last night was a great comedic play at the Little Theater "Charley's Aunt." VERY funny. Reminder to all that the "War on Terrorism" is the long haul and there will be more terrible acts visited upon our country. Give the ones you love a hug and let them know you care.

Last night, Mama and I attended the little Theater with the Shipleys. We enjoyed the play, Charley's Aunt and laughed at the antics of the players. It was great to get out and see that people can still laugh and enjoy themselves. The theater was crowded and everyone seemed to have a good time. On our way home, we drove down the deserted streets and the leaves were falling just like autumn back up North. It is wonderful to be out with our family, and once more, we are so glad that you all live cose to us. Mark sat with Mama and me and Nina and Claude were down on the front row. You all would have enjoyed the play and recommend the Ltttle Theater to everyone in our family.

Last night, 19 September 2001 our President, George W. Bush, made an electrifying speech to a joint session of Congress. The President galvanized the Nation in his speach that has been unequaled since FDR made his speech to Congress after Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. Last night, the entire Congress stood and cheered many times. Even the Democrats support our President. But this is just the beginning and the long road ahead will be rough and filled with many disappointments. There will be casualties and our family will be a part of the struggle. We can do no less. Our way of life is threatened and evey citizen is in danger as long as terrorism goes un stopped. But we can and we must resist and we will fight and in the end, we shall prevail. It may not be in our time. But Mama and I will do our best to keep up our spirits and support you and our family in which ever way we can.

Watch TV. Listen to the radio. Talk to your freinds and neighbors. Everyone is an expert. Everyone knows what must be done to defeat Bin Laden. Every one is right and they are all wrong. This is a fight that no one has ever fought before. No nation in recent history has ever fought a religious war that covers the entire world. Its not just Bin Laden. There are terrorist cells in almost evey nation of the world. Kill Bin Laden or put him jail and terrorism goes on. Kill one and a dozen step up to take their place. Americans have a long struggle ahead of them. No one can imagine what changes there will be in our lives. War will touch everyone in some way. There should be a declaration of War to get the nation ready. Our mind set that it will only last a few month's is bad for the fight. This is not a police action like Korea or a fight to win the hearts and minds like Viet Nam. This is the total destruction of the enemy. And who are the enemy? We do not know. Not yet, anyway. There are potential terrorists right here in Florida. There might be one or more in Tallahassee. They are what is called "sleepers" or those who blend into the community and wait till the order comes. You never know where the next terrororist strike will take place. Like Israel, everyone is on the front lines.

Today it has been one week since terrorists destroyed the World Trade Centers. Step by step the United States is preparing for the long and costly war that will follow. But, step by step the peacenicks are taking the steps that they hope will make us weak. Like Viet Nam, those who would make us weak and ineffective are meeting in homes and class rooms and. The weak, limp wristed liberals are going to try every thing they can to weaken our resolve. Hurry Mr President! Act now while the iron is hot. Ignore the voices of the liberals before the peacnicks have their way. The longer the war, the greater the chance that the American people will loose their resolve.

Kurt, You did a great job on the Lake Ella pictures. Being together with family will be long remembered in the pictures that we take. How precious, pictures are to Mama and me. Our families, long gone, are treasured by us. The photo ablums that Grandma is making will be invaluable as the grandchildren grow up. How soon we forget what our parents looked like. We often go back just to yesteryear and think of the good times we had when we were kids.

Barbra is back from seeing her honey. She looks so happy and I fear she is in love. Well, we all remember those times. If only she and Derek can prolong that love for the next fifty years. Why not? Barbra had dinner with us tonight and told us all about her trip to Gainsville. Well I guess not all. Then Mama and Barbra and Nina went shopping for paint. What a time we have. This is what being a family is all about. I just hope all of you are able to enjoy life as Mama and I have. Family means togetherness. It is communication. It is interacting. It is grandparent's, and adult kids and grandchildren. And good times and crying together and laughing at eachother. It is WONDERFUL!

We had a wonderful family day today. We met at Lake Ella. The Arklow Bowmans, the Shipley's and the Lookout Trail Bowmans. We shared our lunch and then sat out in the bright September Sunlight. It was a beautiful day and a good time was had by all. All? well, most. Then we stood beside the famous Lake Ella tree and had our picture taken. Life is good. But, many are sad today. There are many empty chairs in our country. There is much ahead of us. The struggle will not be easy. But we shall prevail. We won a war against the Axis and it seemed like impossible odds on the day after Pearl Harbor. But good leaders and the determination of the free peoples of the world fought against impossibe odds and at last we won. This is a war of idologies. Freedon against opression. Yhe enemy is a people who is diametrically opposed to everthing we hold dear. We must win. If we loose it is the end of civilization and our way of life. There is no way that we can not win..God Bless America

***There is much brave talk today on the TV, Radio and by the common citizens of our nation. Let's do this! let's do that! bomb the bastards! kill all the towel heads. Kill Usamus Ben Laden. Etc. But, to understand the terrorist problem, look to Israel. They have been fighting terrorism for many years. They have identified the terrorists and they have killed them and their leaders and yet the terrorism goes on as we speak. And no nation is more dedicated to eliminating terrorism. Just about every Israeli citizen carries a fire arm where ever they go. Men, women and grandparents as well as members of their armed forces. Can you see any of this in the US? The bleeding heart hand wringing liberals and the winning democrats and the anti- gun activists? I might be wrong but I fear the country is too liberal to get serious and do what has to be done. To further understand the problem of getting Ben Laden. Afghanistan is where he is. But, ask the Russians what it is like to be in that country. No country has ever been as ruthless and able to kill the enemy as the Russians in the way they fight wars. Yet, Where are the Russians in Afghanistan today? Huh? so, All this brave saber rattling is just so much praddle. Will anyone ever cross a bridge or go through a tunnel or fly in a airliner or visit a major city. or yes, attend a big football game without wondering... is this the day that has my name on it? Terrorism is not over, it has just begun.

** At 0900 this morning, terrorists struck at the United States with a dastardly act that shall live in infamy. The Trade Centers in New York City were struck by our enemies in hi-jacked commercial airliners. The destruction was incredible and both of the towers collapsed. Loss of life will be in the thousands. Those who perpetrated this dastardly act must be tracked down and punished. But how? I lived in Viet Nam when terrorism was a way of life for everyone. Men and women who are willing to give their lives for their cause are heroes to their countrymen. There are volunteers who will give their lives and punishment will be an empty threat But still, we must do all we can to punish the nation and or the individuals who planned and carried out this act of war against our country. Heaven help us! God Bless America!

** Help! I put out the call. Clear the lake bank. Yesterday, the Shipley's and the Roberson's came en-mass with tools and cutters and muscle power. They worked and pulled and cut and yanked. Even Buddy and Sandy did their part. The lake bank looks great. We have a lake once more. OK, its not as deep as it once was but it takes time. At least we can see the lake again. Thank you all for working like beavers. Barbra got dirty. (and she spoke in a southern accent) Derek worked like a lumber jack. Claude's cold got better. Nina was awesome. Mark kicked the weeds out of the ground. Adam pulled and cut and hauled. Grandma and I are impressed. Teamwork did the trick. You all deserve a big, Well Done! We will never forget you. What a great family!

3. The end of another week. It sure has been a rainy summer and the autumn seems to be a wet one also. Well, everyone bitched about the drought and now we have rain. Can't make any one happy it seems. I am looking out at our lake and it is comming up. At last we live on Lake Kilkee again. Kurt, when you take over the world, be sure to let us know so we can be present. Where is everyone? never see the Shipley's in Actnuts. Must be too busy. Stop and smell the flowers.

6. We are so glad that Barbra is happy once more. Being married to a wonderful man and loving him is better than hitting the lottery. Seeing Barbra smiling and hearing the happiness in her voice is as good as it gets. Derek, we are proud of you and so glad you are in the family. Semper Fi!

10. Well, yesterday did not turn out as planned. MJ and I were going to go driving. Then, the strap hangers joined forces and before we knew it, we had a convoy. In a blinding rain the Shipley's followed Mama and me out to visit Kim and family. It had been a long time since we were to the property and we had to take a tour through the house to see all the changes since Matt moved out. It was a Labor Day to be remembered. Barbra is still in Gainsville with her Derek and probably is on the road right now to go back to Tallahassee. Kurt came to see us yesterday and just looked at our leaking garbage disposal and fixed it with a glance. Thanks Kurt. The check is in the mail. Today, all will go back to work or school and Mama and I go back to our peaceful life on Lake Kilkee. It won't be long till I can paddle around the lake and that will be OK by me. Have a good week and know we are thinking of you all.

13. Thanks for all the good times last night everyone. We missed those that were missing! All the food was great and for once we did not have many left overs. Looks like we might get rain again today. Christy I feel good that we got the invitations done. I will start looking for soup recipes unless you have a favorite one you like. How about you Mama do you have a favorite soup recipe?? You usually make great soup without a recipe. Think it over and we will get together later on that. Love you!

14. Hey Family! It's Labor Day. Even Kurt is off today. Last evening, we celebrated with a family picnic at the Shipleys. What fun! we laughed and talked and ate good food and then lay around on the floor and exchanged thoughts on this and that. Even Kurt showed up with his new Camry. What an awesome vehicle. It reminded me of the first Toyota Celica I bought back in the stone age. A flashy little car that was meant for racing. Easy on the eye. These days are rainy ones and every thing looks green. The lakes are filling up once more and some day I may be able to float the canoe in Lake Killkee. Have a good day all of you.

15. September is here and Labor Day is tomorrow. But not all of us have the big day off? Some one must man the ramparts. Walk the guard post and work at the dealership. I hope all of us appreciate those hard working members of the work force. They work so we can goof off. They bring back the bacon so we can enjoy life. How easy it is to forget them. Out od sight, out of mind? Not with this man. I remember the lonely years when we were far away from family and friends. So, here's to those who are duty while the rest of us play. God bless you and may God keep you.

Glad Thrish and Steve are enjoying their trip. Makes me think of the times when we visited some of the same sights. Oh to be in good health and young. Oh well, we still have much to be thankful for and count our blessings. Hope all are having a great Holiday weekend. Keep in touch.
